The Western Bay of Plenty District Council would like to inform you of upcoming road reconstruction works scheduled to take place on Ōropi Gorge Road between late January and June 2026. The area of the works is located to the east of 382 Oropi Gorge Road.
These works are necessary to improve stormwater management, stabilise slopes, and enhance road safety in the Ōropi area. The scope of work includes excavation, kerb construction, service relocation, stormwater, pavement construction, and placement of new signs and sight rails.
To complete this work safely, a full road closure will be required for a period of about five months including weekends and public holidays. The closures will ensure that heavy machinery and construction activities can be carried out without risk to road users, residents, or school traffic.
Key details:
- Road affected: Ōropi Gorge Road, between Glue Pot Road and Ōropi Road.
- Closure period: Late January and late June 2026
- Access: Detours will be signposted. Emergency services and authorised vehicles will be given escorted access if required.
- Reason for closure: Road reconstruction works to improve safety and resilience of the road.
Detour route:
Traffic will be detoured via Ōropi Road and Glue Pot Road (southern end) as shown on the attached map. The detour is approximately 6.8 km / 8 minutes travel time, which is around 4 minutes longer than the usual journey. Detour signage will be in place throughout the closure period to assist road users.
