Civil Defence and Emergency Management
Western Bay of Plenty District Council is a member of the Bay of Plenty Civil Defence Group. The Bay of Plenty Civil Defence Group is a partnership of local authorities, emergency services, critical infrastructure (water, wastewater, transport, energy and telecommunications) and other organisations that work together to:
- reduce the potential impacts of hazards
- promote community and council readiness to respond to emergencies
- help the community recover after an emergency event

Recovery from Weather Events
The severe weather events experienced this year have had an adverse effect on communities across Western Bay of Plenty. The Western Bay of Plenty District Council-led Recovery Office has been established to coordinate the district wide repair and rebuild efforts on behalf of Council, New Zealand government, and community partners and stakeholders
In March the New Zealand Government announced there would be a Government Inquiry into the Fatal Landslides in Tauranga.
On 22 January 2026 eight people died in two landslides in the region. Two people died when a landslide struck a property in Pāpāmoa’s Welcome Bay Road, and six died several hours later when a section of Mauao, Mount Maunganui collapsed on to the Mount Maunganui Beachside Holiday Park.
This Inquiry operates separately from the Tauranga City Council commissioned External review of Mount Maunganui Beachside Holiday Park landslide.
