Urgent Wastewater Maintenance – Little Waihi, Maketū

Western Bay of Plenty District Council wishes to inform residents of urgent wastewater maintenance work affecting the Little Waihi community in Maketū. We apologise for the short notice and thank the community for their co-operation.

What’s happening and why

• Friday 14 November 2025 | 10am–3pm: Replacement of a section of pipe upstream of the Bledisloe Park Avenue Wastewater Pump Station.
  • This pipe has been found to be corroded and possibly leaking. The replacement is additional work required prior to the main pump station refurbishment, discovered during detailed investigations.
• Monday 17 November – Wednesday 3 December 2025 | 10am–3pm daily: Structural repairs and maintenance at the pump station.

These works are essential to maintain network reliability and prevent potential system failures.

Impact on residents

• All residences will retain wastewater service. Each property has its own wastewater tank and pump, providing 24 hours of storage.
• Residents are asked to minimise wastewater use (e.g., avoid showers, dishwashers, washing machines) during the shutdowns as a preventative measure only.
• An auxiliary pump will be deployed to reduce the risk of overflows.
• There is no expected impact on the estuary or environment.
• Residents with critical medical wastewater needs should make alternative arrangements.

Reason for short notice

The timing of these works is driven by urgent maintenance requirements and contractor availability. We acknowledge that this notice is later than ideal and are reviewing our communications approach to provide better advance notice in the future.

How residents are being informed

• Letters are being delivered to affected properties by our contractor.
• Updates are being shared on Antenno and the Pride of Maketū Facebook page for wider visibility.
