Vegetation Management - Agrichemical Spraying

Council manages vegetation on Council owned and administrated land using a number of vegetation management tools. In some instances, this includes agrichemicals. Council is committed to using the most appropriate vegetation management methods for maintaining reserves and other Council-managed areas. Non-chemical weed control options are used wherever practical; however, there are situations where herbicides, including glyphosate, are necessary to control invasive weed species in public spaces.
All agrichemical applications are undertaken in accordance with New Zealand Standard NZS 8409:2021 - Code of Practice for the Management of Agrichemicals. Management of Agrichemicals and relevant regional regulations, and all scheduled agrichemical spraying applications are publicly notified across the Western Bay of Plenty District..
Please look out for specific spray details on the temporary signage erected during spraying when visiting your local reserves.
District Wide Reserve and Sports Field Spray Locations
Residents are advised that invasive weed control by chemical means will be undertake within the Pukehina Beach, Paengaroa, Maketu, Te Puna, Ōmokoroa, Katikati, Ongare Point, Tuapiro Point, Tanners Point, Athenree, Bowentown, Pio Shores, and Waihī Beach areas. The chemical being sprayed for Broadleaf and Onehunga Weed is: Estate and Lawn Clean Herbicides (active ingredients triclopyr and picloram amin salts)
Spraying for prickle weed is programmed for September/October/November every year to ensure that adult prickle weeds from last year are controlled and germinating weeds for the current season are also addressed. Germination takes place when the ground conditions are warm enough to encourage growth. Spraying has been very slightly delayed this season due to cooler temperatures in early October, and the wind.
Some areas may require an additional spray, to achieve optimal result. All spraying will cease by the end of November 2026.

Please note that these dates are subject to change. Work will start on smaller sites leaving Sportsfields to last, weather dependent and sometimes shifting from one planned area to another as local weather systems allow.
