Full steam ahead for new Western Ave Playground
Thursday, 21 June 2018
In February this year we asked the Omokoroa community for feedback on a draft concept design for the new Western Ave playground.
Common themes from the consultation were:
- To look at further seating opportunities
- To include shade structures
- The location of a drinking fountain
- Equipment specific to under-5's
- Equipment with audio qualities
- Tunnel' ideas
- Planting areas, including to define between activities and assist with safe separation
- Water and sand-play opportunities.
This was considered and incorporated into a revised concept (by the community project team) which was then tendered to playground supply companies.
The feedback specific to water and sand-play we will address during the Omokoroa Domain playground upgrade (planned for 2019) because this location is more suitable.
Council and the project team are in the process of purchasing specific play equipment which will be installed when they become available over the next few months. This includes a twin cableway (flying fox), junior embankment slide, swings, spinner, sound tube, music piece.
It is expected that the initial Stage 1 of the concept plan will be completed by summer.
Another $200,000 to $250,000 is required on top of Council's $100,000 budget to complete remaining stages of the concept plan.
The project team would like to thank the Omokoroa and wider community for the strong interest and support received so far.
Stay tuned for further information once construction starts.
