A section of the Ōmokoroa to Tauranga Cycleway will be closed for the week following the school holidays, so surfacing repairs and other maintenance work can be carried out.
The closure, from Monday 12, to Friday 16 October, will affect the track from Jess Road to Newnham Road.
The section of trail that needs resurfacing is before the bridge on the Newnham Road side (marked in green on the map above). Due to the location and it being the narrowest part of the trail, a detour is not possible. Weed trees along the railway line will be also be removed.
“The section of surfacing repairs is a very narrow section with no room to pass, and the work involves heavy machinery, so the safest option for everyone is to close the track temporarily,” says Scott Parker, Western Bay of Plenty District Council Cycleways Manager.
"Unfortunately, there are no detours. So if you are planning a ride from one end to the other of the Ōmokoroa to Tauranga cycleway between 12-16 October, please rethink your plans.
“This is a popular track, particularly during the warmer months, so we’ve timed the work to avoid the cherry blossom season and school holidays, and have it finished before Labour Weekend and the start of the busy summer season.”
The Ōmokoroa to Tauranga Cycleway is a 19km shared walking and cycling route that links Ōmokoroa with Tauranga’s wider cycleway network through a mix of off-road paths, boardwalks and local road connections.
On average, around 250 people a day use the trail between Ōmokoroa and the Wairoa river.
