Western Bay of Plenty District Council has completed its major No. 1 Road Rehabilitation Project, including the full reconstruction of two kilometres of No. 1 Road, delivering a safer, more resilient transport route for one of Te Puke's key growth and production areas.
The upgraded road provides a vital connection for orchards, post-harvest businesses, farms, schools, emergency services, and residents.
Over the past two years, Council has undertaken a significant programme of work to rebuild the road corridor, improve road safety, reduce flooding risks and future-proof the route for continued growth.
Western Bay of Plenty District Council Senior Transportation Project Engineer Jamie Minchington said the project was an important investment in infrastructure that supports a growing community.
"This area is a key route in Te Puke and is used daily by residents, students and families, emergency services, the kiwifruit industry and many others in our community.
"It's critical that both the road and the infrastructure beneath it are fit for purpose and able to meet the demands of current and future growth."
As well as the 2km concrete road reconstruction and resurfacing to improve durability and long-term performance, other key improvements include improved roadside drainage systems to better protect the road from storm damage and reduce surface flooding. A section of road near Cannell Farm Drive was also lowered and underground services relocated to accommodate a potential future connection.
“Completing this work alongside the rehabilitation project avoids costly disruption and rework in the future,” says Jamie.
Jamie notes that the benefits of the project will be felt for years to come.
"The community can now benefit from a road that is safer, more durable and better suited to everyday traffic, as well as heavy vehicle movements.
"A huge thanks to residents, school families, growers, businesses and all road users for their patience and understanding while this work was carried out.”
The completion of the No. 1 Road Rehabilitation Project marks another step in Council's commitment to maintaining and improving critical transport infrastructure across the Western Bay.
Looking ahead, further improvements are planned for No. 1 Road, with funding secured from the Te Puke Eastern Community Board to extend the existing footpath along the route. The project is expected to get underway in the coming months, improving walking connections and safety for residents.
