Funding boost for community spaces across the Western Bay

Community halls, sports clubs, schools and youth groups across the Western Bay are set to benefit from more than $116,000 in Council funding.

Seven organisations have been awarded funding through Western Bay of Plenty District Council's Facilities in the Community Fund, supporting projects that will enhance local spaces.

The funding will help deliver new cricket practice nets at Ōmokoroa Cricket Club, upgrades to the Katikati Community Centre, refurbishment of the Te Puke Scout Group den, improvements to Te Kura Kaupapa Te Matai's pool facilities, and sporting and community facility upgrades in Katikati and Te Puke.

Council’s Senior Recreation Planner, Samantha Pottage, says many of these organisations are powered by volunteers, and this funding helps ensure they can continue providing safe, welcoming and well-maintained spaces for their communities.

"Community facilities are often at the heart of local life. They're where people come together to play sport, learn new skills, connect with neighbours, celebrate milestones, and support one another," says Samantha.

"Many of these groups dedicate countless volunteer hours to maintaining and improving these spaces. This funding helps support their efforts and ensures local facilities continue to meet the needs of growing communities.

"While every project is different, they all contribute to stronger, more connected communities."

Maketū-Te Puke Ward Councillor Grant Dally, who was part of the assessment panel, says the applications highlighted the passion, pride and commitment that exists throughout the District.

"Behind every application is a group of people who care deeply about their community and are investing their time and energy to make a difference.

"What impressed us was the diversity of projects and the impact they'll have. Whether it's supporting young people, improving recreational opportunities, preserving community assets or creating more welcoming spaces, these projects will deliver benefits that extend well beyond the buildings themselves."

Grant says the fund is an important way Council can partner with local organisations to help communities continue to thrive.

"These facilities don't just provide a service. They're often the places where friendships are formed, skills are learned and communities come together. Supporting them is an investment in the wellbeing of our District."

More than 30 applications were received this year, requesting over $850,000 in funding, highlighting both the demand for community facility investment and the dedication of local organisations working to improve their communities.

The Facilities in the Community Fund is available every two years and supports community-owned or community-managed facilities that provide a public benefit. Funding can be used for projects that improve, renew or enhance the spaces where communities gather, connect and participate.
