State of Emergency declared for Western Bay ahead of Cyclone Vaianu
Western Bay of Plenty District Council has declared a State of Emergency, ahead of Cyclone Vaianu reaching New Zealand and the District.
Western Bay of Plenty Mayor James Denyer says the decision is a precautionary step to ensure the District is ready to respond quickly and effectively if the cyclone impacts local communities.
“Declaring a State of Emergency now ensures we have the resources, coordination and powers in place to respond when and if we need them.
“It gives our emergency management team the flexibility to act quickly – including coordinating resources, supporting evacuations if required, closing roads or areas, and protecting people and property.
“Declaring ahead of impact allows us to stay ahead of the situation, rather than forcing decisions to be made under pressure.”
Mayor James also acknowledges the significant effort already underway across the District.
“I want to thank Council staff, contractors, iwi partners, community leaders and residents who have already been preparing and looking out for others.
“That collective effort - from securing properties, checking vulnerable neighbours, opening community spaces and preparing response teams - makes a real difference to how well we get through events like this.”
Residents are urged to continue preparing now, follow official advice, avoid unnecessary travel, and stay well clear of coastal areas during the storm.
“Please take this event seriously. Preparation is essential and it is far better to be safe than sorry.”
People are encouraged to continue reporting slips, flooding, blocked drains and other issues via 0800 926 732, or the Antenno app.
