Margaret Murray-Benge announced as Deputy Mayor

Long-serving councillor Margaret Murray-Benge has been announced as Deputy Mayor of Western Bay of Plenty District Council.

Western Bay Mayor James Denyer confirmed the decision ahead of Council’s inaugural meeting and declaration ceremony for all elected members on Wednesday, 5 November.

Margaret brings long experience in local government, first becoming a councillor in 1977 for Waimairi District until 1989, and then Christchurch City from 1992 to 1998, before gaining election to Western Bay in 2004.

“Margaret brings valuable experience to the role, and I have always been impressed by her dedication to serving the community and highlighting issues close to people’s hearts,” explains Mayor James.

“Margaret’s strong election result is an indication of that dedication and connection, and something I wanted to recognise.

“I look forward to working with her in a mutually supportive and constructive manner to achieve some great outcomes for the District.”

Margaret says she is delighted to be appointed as Deputy Mayor – the first time in her local government career, following previous chair roles including her appointment as Community Committee chair for the 2022-2025 triennium.

“My job is to support the Mayor and our Council, and I will give it my all. While we each bring our own perspectives, I am confident we will work together constructively and with respect, always focused on the best outcomes for our District and community.

“The Western Bay of Plenty is a special place, and it’s important to me that people feel they can turn to their Council and trust us to listen and respond - no matter the issue, big or small. I’m committed to upholding that trust and working hard for our community.

“I think we have got a really strong Council, with a mixture of experienced and new faces, and above all valued members in the community. I’m excited to help support the team over the next three years.”
