Two of our local playgrounds are getting a refresh, and we’re keen to hear your ideas!
The playgrounds, at Tui Park in Bowentown and Gilfillan Drive Reserve in Katikati, are being updated as part of Western Bay of Plenty District Council’s ongoing playground renewal programme.
Work will focus on replacing or refreshing equipment within the existing playground footprints. These are not full redesigns, but an opportunity to make sure the spaces support the needs of our growing and changing communities.
Funding of $150,000 for each playground has been allocated through the Long Term Plan 2024-34.
Acting Reserves and Facilities Manager Scott Parker says the playgrounds at Gilfillan Reserve and Tui Park were installed in 1997 and 2001. Over that time, industry standards and the way the communities use these spaces have evolved.
“These playgrounds are already well-used and loved by the community, but much of the equipment is tired and outdated, so this work is about making sure they are safe, fun, and reflect how play spaces are used by families now,” says Scott.
“Playgrounds play a big role in helping tamariki stay active, connect with others and explore the world around them. That’s why we’re encouraging the community to tell us what they want to see in these spaces. Your feedback will help shape the designs.”
Scott says community input is important to ensure the updates meet local needs.
“If you live nearby or bring your tamariki to play at these playgrounds, now’s the time to share your thoughts on what equipment, activities and features you’d like included.”
Feedback is open now and closes at 12pm on Thursday 28 August 2025.
