Upcoming Road Closure – Pongakawa School Road railway crossing
We’re carrying out important upgrade works at the Pongakawa School Road rail crossing, which will involve resealing the road surface to improve safety, durability, and comfort for road users.
To complete this work safely and efficiently, Pongakawa School Road will be closed at the rail crossing for two days. Detours will be in place via Maniatutu Road and Pongakawa Station Road to ensure continued access to other routes, including school and bus services.
What’s happening?
- Rail crossing resealing works
- Where: Pongakawa School Road rail crossing (near SH2)
- When: From 6:00am Wednesday 6 August to 6:00am Friday 8 August
- Access: Full road closure in place, with resident access maintained. Please follow detour signage.
Why we’re doing this work
The existing road surface has worn down over time, and with continued use and weather impacts, it's time for a proper fix. The crossing will be resurfaced with durable asphalt, which is designed to better withstand wear and tear, reduce potholes, and provide a safer, more even road surface for the long term.
What you need to know
- Detours will be clearly signposted around the closure
- Access to the school and surrounding areas will remain available via Maniatutu Road and Pongakawa Station Road
- Residents will still be able to access and exit their properties throughout the works
- There will be no access over the railway line from Pongakawa School Road to SH2/Te Puke East Road/Pacific Coast Highway during this time
- Please allow extra time for travel
- Emergency and essential access will be maintained
We understand that road closures can be disruptive - particularly for families and school travel — and we appreciate your patience and support as we get this essential work done.
