Standing for Council is a big decision. But it shouldn’t feel like a mystery.
That’s why Western Bay of Plenty District Council is holding Candidate Information Sessions – so anyone thinking about standing in the local body elections this year knows what to expect.
These sessions are a chance to get clear on what it really takes, hear from those who’ve been there, and ask the questions that matter:
- Wednesday 11 June, 6–7pm, Ōmokoroa Pavilion, Activity Space
- Thursday 12 June, 6–7pm, Te Puke Memorial Hall, Settlers Lounge
This year’s election brings some of the biggest changes to Council’s make-up in decades — including the reduction of councillors from 11 to nine, the introduction of the Waka Kai Uru Māori Ward, and new subdivisions within the Ōmokoroa–Kaimai and Te Puke–Eastern Community Boards to ensure fairer, more balanced representation across the rohe (District).
Council Chief Executive Miriam Taris says the sessions are about helping potential candidates understand what the role involves, the time commitment required, and how Council decisions impact the everyday lives of people across the rohe.
“We know that strong representation comes from people who care about where they live and want to make a real difference,” says Miriam.
“But putting your hand up can feel like a big step. These sessions are here to demystify the process, explain what’s involved, and help people feel informed and prepared to make that call.”
The sessions will cover the nomination process, key election dates, and the ins and outs of being an elected member — from governance responsibilities to the support provided.
Adding to the kōrero will be two guest speakers who know exactly what it’s like to be new to local government. Tauranga City Councillors Kevin Schuler (joining the Ōmokoroa session) and Hautapu Baker (joining the Te Puke session) were both elected for the first time last year. They’ll share their experiences as first-time candidates — from putting their names forward and hitting the campaign trail, to finding their feet at the Council table.
“Being an elected member is a real privilege — but it’s also a big responsibility,” says Hautapu.
“It’s about bringing your community’s voice forward, asking good questions, and playing your part in making smart, future-focused decisions.”
Whether you’re giving serious consideration to standing, or just curious about how local government works, these sessions are an opportunity to learn more, connect with others, and start the kōrero on what it takes to represent your rohe.
“Good decisions for our District start with good people at the table — people who care, who bring different perspectives, and who are committed to making our communities thrive,” says Miriam.
“These sessions are a great first step to finding out if this could be you.”
