Explore the incredible bird breeding colony on Maketū Spit and get up close to thousands of red-billed gulls, critically endangered black-billed gulls and the declining NZ dotterel as they gather to breed. You may even see some of the very cute baby birds on their nests in the sand.
Learn about the important work being done on the Spit to restore this important place and keep it safe for the special birds that nest here.
Experience the beauty of nature as you enjoy a delicious breakfast on the beach, and then embark on a boat trip and guided walk to the heart of the bird colony.
This annual event is a collaborative effort between Maketū Wetlands, Maketū Surf Lifesaving Club and Maketū Hauora. Schedule:
🍳9:00 AM - 11:00 AM: Breakfast and bird colony trip (last trip departs at 10:45 AM)
To support the incredible work of MOWS, we kindly ask for a koha donation.
