The BOP Sikh Society presents: Nagar Kirtan

(Postponement Date: Sunday, 22 September 2024)

Start and finish at the Sikh Temple, 26 No.3 Road, Te Puke

Nagar Kirtan is a Sikh custom involving the professional singing of holy hymns throughout a community. “Nagar” means neighbourhood and “Kirtan” describes the signing of devotional hymns.

The event promotes the Guru’s message of love and inter-faith harmony. Sikh values are shared across faith communities including compassion, self-less service, community and equality.

The procession is led by saffron-robed Panj Piare (the five beloved of the Guru), who are followed by the Guru Granth Sahib, the holy Sikh Scripture which is placed on a main float.

The procession will conclude at the Gurudwara with Adras (prayer) and food.

The community is welcome to join the parade and the festivities, at the temple afterwards, there is free food and an opportunity to volunteer and serve others, which is an integral part of the Sikh tradition.
