Registering your Dog

All dogs are required to be registered before they are 3 months of age.  Registration must be renewed before 30 June each year.  The registration year runs from 1 July to 30 June of the following year.

Each dog must be registered at the address where they spend most of their time. If you are under 16 years of age and own a dog, it must be registered under the name of a parent or guardian.

Any dogs not previously registered before will pay a pro rata fee calculated from the time the dog was three months old.

If your dog was registered with us last year, registration forms will be mailed or emailed to you in June. Please advise us if your address or email changes or you will not receive the re-registration form.

Application for permit to keep more than 2 dogs in residential areas and more than 5 Dogs in Rural Areas

This permit is to ensure the number of dogs kept on any property does not increase to an extent where problems may arise.

There is a $50 application fee and the permit is valid for the number of dogs you have applied for on that property.  If you move house or add another dog, you will need to re-apply to add that dog to the permit, this will incur another $50 fee.

Approval for a permit is not immediate.  The following factors will be taken into account.

  • The size of your property - this does not mean there will be a property inspection in every instance.
  • Have there been previous barking complaints.
  • Have there been previous roaming/rushing/attacking complaints.
  • Have there been any instances where your dog/s have been a nuisance.

Should the permit be granted and there is a substaniated complaint, your permit may be revoked and you will be required to reduce the number of dogs kept on the property.

Microchipping your Dog

All dogs in the Western Bay need to be microchipped. This is a small computer chip inserted under the skin which is used to identify your dog if it gets lost or stolen.

The only exemptions are working dogs that are kept solely for herding or stock driving.

Benefits of microchipping:

  • Identification if your dog is lost or ends up at the pound
  • Permanent method of identification
  • Increases the chances of stolen dogs being returned.

How do I get my dog microchipped

Go to one of our five offices and pay the required microchipping fee.
The cost is $20 per dog.

Two copies of the microchipping certificate are given to you to take to the Te Puke or Katikati Pound during the respective pound's opening hours:

Te Puke        8.30am-9.30am and 3.30pm-4.30pm

Katikati         8.30am-9.30am and 4pm-5pm

Or you can make an appointment for the dog to be microchipped at Barkes Corner Office Greerton on Wednesday mornings between 8.30am–9.30am.

Under exceptional circumstances an Animal Services Officer can organise a home visit, such as for the elderly or disabled.

For home visits, owners must be at home during the day (9am-3pm). The ASO will make an appointment with the dog owner for the next time they are in the area.

Payment for home visits is by cash or cheque.

My dog is already microchipped

The Animal Services team requires a certificate from your veterinarian or Council to verify that the dog is properly microchipped.  You can take your dog to our dog pounds during opening hours to have your dog checked for a microchip.
