Our animal services team is committed to promoting better care and control of dogs, providing public education, responding to dog control complaints, impounding dogs, maintaining and providing pound facilities and enforcing the Western Bay of Plenty District Council Animal Bylaws and Policies.

Dog Control Policy, Practices and Statistics

Section 10A of the Dog Control Act 1996 requires Council to publicly report, each financial year, on the administration of our Dog Control Policy and Practices along with some specified Dog Control related statistics.

Upon adoption and public notification of the report, Council is also required to provide a copy to the Secretary for Local Government.

The content of the report is based on the requirements of the Dog Control Act 1996.

Registering your dog

Dogs are required to be registered each year.  The registration year runs from 1 July to 30 June of the following year.

Any dog over the age of three months must be registered.

Council rewards responsible dog owners by offering a discounted registration fee if the dog is registered by 1 August each year. A further discount of $10.00 is given to de-sexed dogs, working dogs, and NZ Kennel Club dogs.

For the full schedule of charges and further information see our registration brochure.

Any dogs that have not been registered before pay a pro rata fee calculated from the time the dog was 3 months old.

If your dog was registered with us last year, registration forms will be mailed to you in June. Please advise us if your address changes or you do not receive the form.

If your dog dies during the year you may apply in writing for a partial refund of the dog registration fee.

If you need to register a dog and you have not registered before, please contact the Council on 0800 926 732 or visit one of our Customer Service Centres at Waihi Beach, Katikati, Omokoroa and Te Puke.  Don't forget to bring in any desexing, microchip or NZKC certificates.
