Walking & Cycling Strategy

This document is the first Walking & Cycling Strategy prepared for the Western Bay of Plenty District and was adopted at the Council's Policy & Planning Committee on 10 September 2009.

It outlines the Council's recognition of the need to develop sustainable travel options within the District and its' commitment to the development of walking and cycling opportunities.

The Strategy informs Council policy and is a requirement in order to qualify for potential transportation funding. Within Council it will be used as an operational tool to assist project planning and prioritisation.

Walking and Cycling Strategy 2009 (2Mb)

The Strategy has been developed in line with best practice guidance in relation to the development of walking and cycling strategies. It also ties in with both the national and regional walking and cycling strategies. From a broader angle, policy relating to health, transport and sustainability all highlights the importance of walking and cycling to our communities.

Council officers are currently developing a 3 year work programme for walking and cycling which will identify prioritised projects. This will focus on those priorities already identified within the Strategy but will also take into account both funding availability and the prioritisation criteria - a mechanism by which any other walking & cycling suggestions can be considered. The 3 year work programme is debated and approved by the Services Committee at a formal meeting.  It is anticipated that the work programme will be approved by the end of the year so any comments or suggestions in relation to individual priorities are welcome over the next couple of months - please address these to the Alex Finn, Assets & Engineering Team at the Western Bay of Plenty DC (alex.finn@westernbay.govt.nz)
