Bylaws

A bylaw is a rule made by the council that affects how people live, work and play. Bylaws protect both the environment and your rights. They largely cover health, safety and environmental issues such as the control of traffic, dogs, nuisances and food premises as well as the use of public places.

The consequences for not complying with a rule range from fines, seizure of property and remedial action.

There are currently 14 Bylaws in place in the Western Bay district. The enforcement of the bylaws is carried out by council staff and/or New Zealand Police.

The Bylaws have been made in accordance with the Local Government Act and other relevant legislation and control specific activities within the district.

The Council will always consult with the local community before adopting any new bylaw or reviewing an existing bylaw.
