Rock Revetment Completed

With summer on its way the rock revetment part of the coastal protection project has been completed with construction of the last section fronting Brewers Park.

The finished rock revetment extends along the southern portion of Shaw Road and the shoreline fronting The Loop protecting a total of 50 private properties and Council Reserve areas.  The revetment structure has been built over two years between Easter and Labour Weekend 2010 and resuming at Easter 2011.

Council’s Project Manager Christian Dullnig noticed that many people have been impressed with the final outcome of the revetment and comments have been received that the beach is a much safer place without the old deteriorated protection structures sticking out of the sand.

Reflecting on the overall construction, Christian says it has been challenging due to delays in sourcing rocks perfectly suited to the job, stormy weather conditions and the subsequent low beach levels which shortened the daily construction times on the beach.

The La Niña climate cycle with its typical north easterly winds and wave surges, combined with the natural 18.6 year extreme high tide tidal cycle, has resulted in unusually low beach levels for the 2011 construction season.

Council will undertake regular monitoring and any maintenance of the rock revetment structure that may be required.  Ongoing monitoring, review and maintenance of the dune enhancement areas will also continue.

There is no further scrapping of the beach or reshaping of sand dunes proposed for the remainder of this year.  Any decision about further dune enhancement works will be made next year and will depend on the outcome of ongoing monitoring.
