Waihi Beach residents along The Loop will be the first to see construction on the Western Bay of Plenty District Council $1.235m shoreline protection project when it starts on Tuesday, 6 April.
The contractor Transfield Services Limited will be preparing its site offices in the week before Easter Weekend in readiness for the first part of the rock revetment construction that will extend along the front of properties in The Loop.
Council's project manager Christian Dullnig says Council will contact land owners to advise them when work will be done in front of their property.
Throughout the project Christian will also be at the Council on-site project office to answer any queries or concerns.
Revetment construction of 430 metres along The Loop is expected to take about three months depending on weather and tides, after which work will start on the 590 metres along the Shaw Road foreshore.
Construction will be carried out from 7.30am until 6.30pm each weekday and the contractor will determine the daily programme around the tides – with work mainly done during lower tides.
Residents can expect increased heavy traffic movement along Seaforth Road, Shaw Road and The Loop with Transfield Services transporting rock daily from their local quarry above Waihi Beach.
During construction trucks and diggers will be operating on the beach, but only public access ways in the vicinity of the physical works will be closed.
The contractor will remove existing structures as the new rock revetment is built so that the beachfront is protected at all times against any storm events.
The revetment project is expected to be completed by Labour Weekend, October 2010.
