Both councils contribute to the maintenance of the office, which in turn has several important functions, including maintenance of a ready to use facility if an emergency occurs, a welfare organisation and a rescue unit.

As part of its responsibility to the community it serves, the office also offers education and training to any group wishing to up-skill in civil defence matters.
